Gallery Weekend Berlin 2012
Gallery Weekend Berlin 2012
www.vernissage.tv | Some highlights of Gallery Weekend Berlin 2012. Berlin may not have a "big" international art fair any more (Art Forum Berlin, RIP), but the galleries in Berlin seem to be more enthusiastic about their Gallery Weekend anyway. With 51 galleries offically participating and many more satelliting, it's impossible to check out all shows. The above video by our correspondent Astrid Gleichmann shows a small selection of the program. It shows Jenny Holzer and Anthony McCall at Sprüth Magers Gallery, Leo Gabin at Peres Projects, Andreas Golder at Michael Fuchs Galerie, and Martin Eder at Galerie Eigen + Art. ABC Art Berlin Contemporary 2011: About Painting
www.vernissage.tv | This year's ABC - Art Berlin Contemporary runs under the motto About Painting. But it's not strictly painting. Visitors to the fair will also find sculpture, drawing, video etc. Some of them are more "painterly" than others. Art Berlin Contemporary, the "independent, hybrid exhibition format, between curated show and gallery event", was founded four years ago by a group of Berlin galleries.

Germany Pt 8: The Berlin Wall (Eastside Gallery)
Germany Pt 8: The Berlin Wall (Eastside Gallery)
The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer) was a physical barrier erected by the German Democratic Republic (GDR) (East Germany) completely encircling West Berlin, separating it from East Germany, including East Berlin. The longer inner German border demarcated the border between East and West Germany. Both borders came to symbolize the Iron Curtain between Western Europe and the Eastern BlocThe East-Side-Gallery is the longest monument for peace and reconciliation in Berlin. In 1990, after the division of Berlin had come to an end, countless artists from all over the world painted the dreary 1.3 kilometer long wall that runs along the Mühlenstrasse. The colorful collection of political and poetic murals is a unique attraction. Unfortunately automobile exhaust fumes and willful vandalism have taken their toll on the East-Side-Gallery and as a result many of the pictures have had to undergo restoration. The spontaneous work of art between Oberbaum Bridge and Ostbahnhof has meanwhile been placed under historical preservation. Still today it gives testimony to the hopes and effusive joy that was felt in Berlin after the Wall fell. It is an irony that the only preserved paintings on the Berlin Wall are located on former GDR territory: When the city was still divided, only the west side of the concrete wall could be painted.

Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery - In A Berlin Minute (Week 95)
Berlin Wall - East Side Gallery - In A Berlin Minute (Week 95)
This 1-minute video is only intended to give a quick impression of the East Side Gallery - an outdoor gallery of 105 official images painted on a 1.3 km section of the Berlin Wall in Friedrichshain. If you want to look at an image for longer or read a slogan, just pause the video. Also I'll be uploading more images to my Flickr page soon. The East Side Gallery was first created in 1990, shortly after the wall became open. Many of the pieces were restored in 2009 in time for the 20-year anniversary of the opening of the wall. On the back side of the wall (facing the river Spree) graffiti artists have left their own unofficial mark. As you can see from this video, I'm currently back in Berlin - but only for a short spell. Among other things I'm here to spend time with my family, mainly with my mother who is currently in Berlin as well and is featured walking through this video. The song featured is "Destiny" by Jason Matherne aka Goonygoogoo Productions. --- For links and more information, please check out my blog: goodhardworkingpeople.blogspot.com Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter: twitter.com Flickr: www.flickr.com Google+: gplus.to YouTube: www.youtube.com YouTube: www.youtube.com Tumblr: luciwest.tumblr.com --- Berlin "East Side Gallery" "The Wall" Mauer gallery art graffiti "street art" mural Friedrichshain Kreuzberg Spree Germany travel sights attractions tourism tourist city "In A Berlin Minute" "In A Brooklyn Minute" Deutschland reisen Sehenswuerdigkeiten Stadt

Wedding Planner - Micamoca Berlin (Berlin)
Wedding Planner - Micamoca Berlin (Berlin)
In an attempt by art dealers to drum a up a local market to compete with London, Paris and Milan, Gallery Weekend Berlin limps forward into another edition with high hopes amidst a Berlin torn between it’s anti-market roots and the increasing dominance of commercial galleries, between general gentrification and preserving pockets of its Bohemian spirit. Straight out of Via Ventura in Milan, Mariano Pichler's Micamoca migrates to colonize another postindustrial area, filling it with contemporary art from Pichler’s own collection to try energize occupancy by artists and galleries in his recently purchased building. RÖMER + RÖMER - "Die Flut" - Gallery Michael Schultz, Berlin
RÖMER + RÖMER - "Die Flut" - Gallery Michael Schultz, Berlin Römer+Römer present their new cyclus of paintings "Die Flut" as a continuous frieze. opening of the exhibition saturday 13 March, 2010 from 7 to 9 pm "...During a journey through Korea, the artists found their way to the coast of the East Sea, also referred to by Koreans as the Sea of Friendship and by their neighbours on the seas opposite shores as the Sea of Japan. Along the harbour city Busans kilometreslong stretch of city shorelines, the couple observed the beach-life there and photographed groups of schoolgirls and teenagers as they plunged through the waters of the surging sea. Astonishingly, the young people they photographed are, almost without exception, completely clothed; they are either fully dressed in their school uniforms or in fashionable jeans and short-sleeved T-shirts..." "...One follows the rolling of the waves onto sandy shores upon which the sea foam sputters and then gazes into the seeming endlessness of a sea, disrupted only by a few spectacular rock formations or a distant lighthouse. The notion that such suggestively loaded vistas entail not only positive thoughts in current times, however, has been well noted in discussions with RÖMER + RÖMER, who have chosen the subject not lastly due to their great alarm at the growing evidence concerning environmental pollution and global warming, the consequences of which are certain to lead to a rise in sea levels within the foreseeable future ...

Old National Gallery on Museum Island in Berlin Germany
Old National Gallery on Museum Island in Berlin Germany
The Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) on Museum Island in Berlin is a gallery showing many important 19th century works from the collection of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. The Nationalgalerie was founded in 1861, after the donations of 262 paintings by banker Johann Heinrich Wagener. The collection was first housed in the buildings of the Akademie der Künste. The current building, shaped like a Roman temple with an appended apse was planned by Friedrich August Stüler in 1865, following a sketch by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, and its construction between 1869 and 1876 was overseen by Heinrich Strack. The building was heavily damaged in World War II air raids. It was partly reopened in 1949, but reconstruction continued until 1969. Between 1998 and 2001, the museum was renovated thoroughly. Some extra halls were added on the uppermost floor and now contain the Romantic works. The collection contains works from Classicism and Romanticism (by artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and Karl Blechen), of the Biedermeier, the French Impressionism (Édouard Manet, Claude Monet) and early modern works (Adolph von Menzel, Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth). Among the most important exhibits are Friedrich's Mönch am Meer, Menzel's Eisenwalzwerk and sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow's Prinzessinnengruppe, a double statue of princesses Louise and Friederike of Prussia.

POST GRAFFITI ART Delta-Mode2-Eron-Sharp-Ebon Hearth - Czarnobyl-Lucas Carrieri Gallery BERLIN 2009
Graffiti Art has come a long way. Since its beginnings in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the late 60's, the movement caught on very quickly, spreading to New York City and by the late 80's had developed into a fully established movement in Europe as well. One of the biggest artistic movements of all times, graffiti found its way from illegal nocturnal actions into mainstream culture. The interest in showing graffiti on canvas developed as soon as graffiti was sprayed on the walls of the Big Apple. In 1972, Hugo Martinez, a sociology major at City College in New York, took notice of the legitimate artistic potential of the early graffiti writers' generation. United Graffiti Artists and Martinez selected top subway artists from all around the city and presented their work in the formal context of an art gallery. A 1973 article in New York magazine by Richard Goldstein entitled "The Graffiti Hit Parade" was also an early public recognition of the artistic potential of subway artists. In the early 80's in NYC, art galleries started to show graffiti works on canvas so as to expand their horizons. European art dealers soon became aware of the movement and were very receptive to the new art form. Today 'Old School' artists are recognized by institutions, with contemporary museums possessing Post Graffiti works as part of their collections. Their paintings and sculptures can be seen hanging in renowned galleries across the world, and are also the topic of numerous films, books and ...
